The abusers may be staff members, visitors, or even other residents. The victims often have dementia, Alzheimer’s, or physical disabilities.
• Financial abuse. Some staff members sadly try to take advantage of seniors who have money. Family and friends should be concerned if there are powers of attorney in the names of nonrelatives, unexplained purchases, unaccounted-for retirement benefits, including Social Security benefits, and other financial charges and losses that can’t be explained.
• Neglect. Nursing home neglect includes failing to anticipate, monitor, and report the types of abuses described above. Nursing home neglect in Voorhees can also include failing to provide for a resident’s basic needs, allowing a resident to wander, or abandoning a resident.
