Truck Accident Injures Three On New Jersey Turnpike
Last month, a Honda minivan carrying nine occupants, including four children, collided with a tanker truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. The truck accident caused an explosion and critically injured three of the van’s passengers: two young girls, ages 8 and 14, and an adult female passenger.
The van’s driver was returning home with family when the wreck occurred. He maintains that he does not remember the crash. The passengers from the minivan were seen at Hackensack University Medical Center. The two girls suffered head and abdominal injuries, although they are expected to survive. The injured adult female, who is a friend of the family, suffered abdominal injuries.
The 50-year-old driver of the tanker, who jumped out of the truck on his own after it caught on fire, suffered injuries to his leg.
According to police, the crash occurred when the van’s driver, after entering the wrong lane on the turnpike, backed up into the EZ Pass lanes at Exit 18W, and right into the path of the tanker truck. The tanker was carrying 8,500 pounds, or approximately 1,300 gallons, of gasoline, causing an enormous explosion.
The tanker became fully engulfed in flames after hitting a concrete barrier, causing some concern because of the nearness of the flames to the toll booths. The crash caused the closure of the affected section of the turnpike for several hours, resulting in traffic delays.
